Natural Gas Questions

  • What is T.S.S.A?

  • T.S.S.A. stands for the Technical Standards & Safety Authority. They are responsible for regulating Gas Fitters, and help to update and write newer versions of the Ontario Gas Utilization Code. A company MUST be registered as a contractor with T.S.S.A in order to do certain gas repairs or installations. For more on T.S.S.A., visit the links page.

  • What is a gas "infraction"?

  • A gas infraction is a situation where your machine is installed incorrectly, or there is some type of other problem relating to the Ontario Gas Utilization Code with it.

  • What happens if you see a violation?

  • You will receive a notification of the infraction in writing, and Union Gas (the supplier of the fuel) will also be notified, in order to inspect the condition. THIS IS THE LAW!!!

  • Is an infraction a "bad" thing?

  • In MOST cases, the infraction can be remedied while we are at your house. A gas infraction notice is issued for your own safety. It should not be considered a type of "punishment". Remember, we are required BY LAW to issue infractions, so that they can be inspected.

  • Do you always have to notify Union Gas?

  • Yes, for any natural gas infraction, we are required (BY LAW) to notify Union Gas. This is necessary because they are the supplier of the fuel, and the final responsibility on whether the situation is safe or not lies with them. There are fines levied against technicians and companies who fail to follow the code. For a small example of recent charges being laid, visit the T.S.S.A website.

  • Does the gas code change?

  • YES! Every few years, a new version of the code is issued. Technicians who are gas fitters are also required to update their skills periodically in order to renew their licenses.
